Study Team

eSCCIP was developed at the Center for Healthcare Delivery Science, a research center that is part of Nemours Children’s Health. The research team includes a group of psychologists with expertise in pediatric oncology. This team has been developing interventions to support parents and families for many years.

Kimberly Canter, Ph.D., Clinical Psychologist

Dr. Kimberly Canter is a Research Scientist and Pediatric Psychologist in the Center for Healthcare Delivery Science at Nemours Children’s Health. Dr. Canter specializes in supporting families of children with chronic illnesses, including cancer, and internet health interventions. She leads many research projects related to online interventions and helping parents and families cope with stressful medical events and diagnoses. She also provides clinical care to children with chronic illnesses and their families. Dr. Canter is the overall PI of the eSCCIP Study.

David Freyer Children's Hospital Los Angeles PI

David Freyer, D.O., M.S., Attending Physician

Dr. David Freyer is the Director of the Survivorship and Supportive Care Program and an Attending Physician in Hematology, Oncology, and Blood and Marrow Transplantation in the Cancer and Blood Disease Institute at Children's Hospital Los Angeles. He is also a Professor of Clinical Pediatrics and Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of USC.  He has conducted many research studies focused on supporting children with cancer and their families. Dr. Freyer is the site PI for the eSCCIP Study at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. 

Martha Askins MD Anderson PI Headshot

Martha Askins, Ph.D., Clinical Psychologist

Dr. Martha Askins is a Clinical Psychologist and Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. She provides clinical care to children with cancer and their families and has participated in several research studies related to online interventions and psychosocial care. Dr. Askins is the site PI for the eSCCIP Study at MD Anderson.

Lee Ritterband, Ph.D., Clinical Psychologist

Dr. Lee Ritterband is the Jean and Ronald Butcher Eminent Scholars Professor at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He is the Director of the Center for Behavioral Health and Technology and has degrees in clinical psychology and computer technology. Dr. Ritterband is a leading researcher in Internet health interventions. He is the site PI for the eSCCIP Study at the University of Virginia. 

Role of Partner Organizations:

Two additional children’s hospitals are involved in this research project.  These institutions will also recruit people into the eSCCIP study:

  • MD Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital
  • Children’s Hospital Los Angeles

The Center for Behavioral Health and Technology at the University of Virginia is managing the website that hosts both programs in the eSCCIP Study.
